Fireside Chat 02 · Sondermann & Messenger
This is the most confessional of the three, and it gets there fast.
Asked what he'd tell his younger self, Pastor Daniel Messenger doesn't reach for strategy. He says faithfulness — and then names the thing that actually cost him years: "What derailed me, and why I wasn't a pastor earlier, was because I got offended and broke relationships. And really, pride was an issue." His advice to the younger man is four words. Stay faithful. Drop the pride.
Pastor Marty Sondermann picks up the same thread and pushes it further.
"Pride is the root of every sin. It's the first sin, really — when you think about Satan and his pride. He said, I'll raise my throne to that of God. How'd that work out?"
Pastor Marty Sondermann
His other regret is time. Sell out earlier, he says. Nothing in this world was worth the years he spent half-attached to it — and he quotes Pastor Chuck to land it: "You have only one life, it'll soon be past. Only what you do for Christ will last."
The back half turns practical. On accountability, Pastor Dan says flatly that there were seasons he would have quit without those men — not because they kept him out of sin, but because they wouldn't let him stop running: "They're the guys who go, you can't let us down, man. Keep going." Pastor Marty adds the frame worth stealing — every man needs a Paul, a Barnabas and a Timothy: someone to learn from, someone to encourage him, someone to pour into.
On discipleship, Marty's correction is sharp — the Great Commission says make disciples, not make converts. And for the man who wants to be discipled but doesn't know how to ask, Dan's instruction is one word: humility. Walk up to the man whose walk you admire and tell him you think you could learn from him. His encouragement to the would-be mentor is just as good — you will not do it perfectly, and that isn't the point: "The Lord grows the person who's the mentor even more than the person you're raising up."
