What Does It Mean To ‘Hold The Line?’
To “hold the line” commonly means to stand firm: not retreating from a rightful position, not surrendering under pressure, and not compromising a conviction simply because resistance is difficult.
What does that look like?
“It's not easy. It's a storm, and I think every one of us will encounter them,” Calvary South OC pastor and Treasure Valley Men’s Conference ‘26 speaker John Randall told TV MEN’S BLOG. “Jesus never promised us that we wouldn't have storms or that we wouldn't have trials.
“In fact, He said, ‘In this world, you will have tribulation.’ But then He said, ‘Be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.”
Randall is one of seven speakers scheduled for the Treasure Valley Men’s Conference at the Event Center in Caldwell, Idaho on Saturday, August 29. The inaugural conference theme, Awakened to War, is rooted in Ephesians 6:12 and reminds men that the real battle is spiritual:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
In a biblical sense, Christians are called to hold firmly to God Himself, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and God’s truth—not merely to personal preferences, political positions, or human traditions. Moses instructed Israel, “Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name.” (Deut. 10:20, NIV). In its original covenant setting, this called Israel to exclusive loyalty and obedient service to the Lord.
“There are days as a man when you just gotta hold the line,” Randall said. “[For example] your wife's struggling, and your kids are battling, and this situation or that situation is happening on the job or in your family. And as a man, there are just days when you just have to hold fast, and you just have to do what's next.
Sometimes we get ahead of ourselves and instead, we need to move forward one step at a time, he said. “We need to trust in the Lord at all times, not just sometimes.”
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5 NKJV)
“During difficult times, more comfortable times, and all times, I need to trust in the Lord,” Randall said. “And if I'm going to lead my family through the storm, if I'm going to lead them through something that that's difficult then I have to be anchored myself. I can be assured that we're going to make it through because Jesus is going to get us to the other side.”
